ASILOMAR BLACK CAUCUS
It is my historical observation that things don’t change – people change them. There is a lot of money on the table. There is a lot of positive energy for change. This ABC must insure that Black, Brown & Red youth (especially) “achieve equitable outcomes” in this Student Success & Equity effort – and beyond the SS&E.
The list of proposed activities below reflect what I currently know about what the Black Student Union, ASMJC and the Civic Engagement Project are doing. How can we support and expand such activities? Can we access SS&E funds? How? This list of activities and events used to contain the annual Pow-Wow, for example.
Black In Americas: Black and Blue - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V9C4YbM_0w4
Food Pantry / Urban Garden - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xLUWKXGYc8k
California Black Caucus - http://www.zenhari.smcgrdes.com/SUMMER-GD66/NehasiFINAL%20BlasckCaucus/events.html
African American Education Conference - http://eventful.com/modesto/events/annual-african-american-education-conference-/E0-001-080339376-6
Hispanic American Education Conference - https://www.mjc.edu/general/hec/
Hip-Hop History – A 3 evening interactive social and cultural overview of Urban Ethnic Music, beginning with West African “call & response” to “Straight Outta Compton.” - Last night, concert with a twist: Students enrolled can “open mike-it (I have two guys who teach this)!
Book Exchange – the creation of a book exchange would help so many who do not have the economics for texts at the start of the semester. A student would purchase texts only once. Then, they would “sell” back their books to the exchange for scrip that can be used for the next semester.
Who can help with any of this? Contact me and I’ll hook you up with who is doing what. And, don’t worry if you can’t, I have a big list of names who have in some way already offered!
