Modesto Junior College
HISTORY 102 – United States History since 1865
– Professor Al Smith - Founder's Hall 120E - office hours MTWTH 11 - 12:30
SYLLABUS / SCHEDULE for FALL 2018 Section #7084
THIS SEMESTER’S THEME: HUMAN RIGHTS. This means that in all of the readings and discussions, we will be concerned with the concept of social justice and economic rights as motivators for historical change. The complimentary and contrasting aspects of social identity and cultural identity present a history of great tragedy and equally great triumph over tragedy. The course’s theme circulates around the idea that Human Rights are the hallmark of a civilized society, and that if the United States has a special place in history, it will be because of diversity.
TEXTs:
“The Twentieth Century, A People’s History,” by Howard Zinn & “American Cultures,” by Al Smith
