WHY JOIN UMOJA?
The Umoja Community Guided Pathway at Modesto Junior College is part of a state-wide intentional Student Success effort for African American students. Umoja practices are specifically designed to increase retention, and to increase GPA - resulting in higher graduation rates and successful transfer.
Umoja places intentional and deliberate emphasis on topics and curriculum relavant to the African American experience. Umoja program students, counselors and educators also provide a community of assisstance with personal issues that often hinder African American students in the educational setting.
PROSPECTIVE UMOJA STUDENTS
While the Umoja Community is completely dedicated to assissting our students-of-color in achieving student success, Umoja requires that the student also “bring it.”

Umoja Pathways are anchored by culturally relavant core courses in African American and Latino studies. Your Pathway includes english and math – courses that data shows have been potential barriers to students at MJC. Your year-long commitment to culturally relavant learning experiences is complimented by guidance classes.

- A high level of motivation and dedication from the student
- Participation in Umoja activities outside of the classroom
- Meeting with your Umoja counselor regularly throughout the program
- A strong support system and personal attention
- Integrated instruction from committed and caring faculty
- Peer tutoring
- Motivational workshops and cultural events
- Participation in state-wide Umoja Community events
- Education with African American emphasis
- Increased success in math and english courses.

UMOJA COMMITMENT
I agree to make full commitment to UMOJA. My commitment includes the following:
- Enroll in the Umoja classes required until completion of certificate or transfer level courses or graduation.
- Maintain a grade point average (GPA) of at least 2.0 (C average in all courses).
- Meet with the Umoja Counselor/Elder at least twice each semester to discuss educational and career goals.
- Meet with the Umoja Success Specialist at least once a semester to completely access all possible student services.
- Keep current all contact information at ALL times.
- Attend at least one college tour per semester.
- Participate actively in Umoja events, workshops, meetings, conferences and other leadership opportunities.
- Be your brother’s and sister’s keeper – stay in contact with Umoja members & family.
